No Charges For Dopp In Choppergate Scandal
March 24, 2008
The top spokesman for former Governor Eliot Spitzer will not face charges stemming from the Choppergate scandal, according his attorney.
Darren Dopp was offered immunity for providing his testimony to Albany County District Attorney David Soares.
His lawyer now tells NY1 they have concluded their questioning of Dopp and have informed him that he won’t face prosecution.
A spokeswoman for Soares added Dopp could face charges if he is found to give false testimony on the subject in the future.
Dopp was disciplined and received much of the blame for using State Police to collect damaging information about the state’s top Republican, State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno.
The D.A. was also looking into whether Dopp made a false statement on a sworn document to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who also probed the scandal.
The news comes amid news reports indicating Spitzer himself played a far larger role in the smear campaign than he acknowledged in public. A final official report on the matter is expected in the next few days.
Choppergate remains the subject of two other investigations.
