Poll: Majority Of New Yorkers Have High Hopes For New Governor

March 20, 2008

New Yorkers have high hopes for their new governor, according to a new poll released today.

A Quinnipiac University poll finds 75 percent of those surveyed think Governor David Paterson will govern effectively, and two-thirds say he’ll restore trust in government.

Six percent do not believe he will be successful, while 19 percent say they were not sure.

The poll found only 3 percent of New Yorkers have an unfavorable opinion of their new governor, but the majority, 51 percent, say they don’t know enough about him yet to have an opinion.

The majority of this poll was conducted before news of Paterson’s marital infidelities surfaced. Pollsters say attitudes did shift slightly on the last night of the survey, after Paterson admitted to the affairs.

As for the 2010 election, when given the following options for a gubernatorial match-up, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who’s said in the past that he’s not interested in the job, edged out Paterson by 2 percentage points, with 29 percent in favor of the mayor. Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was a very close third, with Attorney General Andrew Cuomo a distant fourth.

As for the former governor, 81 percent of voters say Eliot Spitzer was right to resign. But 48 percent still think he should be charged with a crime.

Quinnipiac surveyed more than 1,500 registered voters statewide between March 16th and 18th for the poll. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
