Council expected to split electronic waste bill in two
March 11, 2008
In an unusual legislative move, the City Council tomorrow is expected to recall a bill requiring electronics manufacturers to recycle their products and reintroduce the legislation as two separate measures as a compromise to appease Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who said he would veto the legislation in its current form.
Staten Island City Councilman Michael McMahon said the Council plans to recall the “ewaste” bill, which passed 47-3 last month, and reintroduce the components of it as two distinct pieces of legislation: One to mandate that companies develop recycling plans for their electronics devices, and another that lays out goals and penalties.
Bloomberg had said he would veto the bill because he felt it placed an unfair burden on the manufacturers, who would face fines if customers do not return their used electronics.
