Harlem Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell 4th busted for DUI

March 6, 2008

State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell 4th, son of the legendary civil rights leader and congressman, was busted for drunk driving on the upper West Side early today, police sources told the Daily News.

Powell, 45, was stopped by police on the Henry Hudson Parkway at W. 82nd Street about 2:30 a.m. after he was spotted swerving in and out of lanes, sources said.

Police reported that the East Harlem assemblyman “smelled strongly of alcohol and had watery eyes.”

A woman was passed out in the back of the car and was so intoxicated she had to be taken to a local hospital, sources said.

Powell failed a breath test at the scene, though not by much, police sources said. He was taken to the 28th precinct stationhouse in Harlem where he refused to take a chemical sobriety test.

He’s awaiting arraignment at Manhattan Criminal Court.

The arrest is the latest legal problem for Powell, who was accused of giving alcohol to a teenage intern in Albany in 2004.

He is believed to be contemplating a run for public advocate.
