City To Grant Permits To 1,000 Fruit, Vegetable Vendors

February 28, 2008

The city will grant permits to 1,000 street vendors who sell fruits and vegetables, according to legislation passed yesterday in the City Council.

The bill, which was supported by Mayor Bloomberg and City Council speaker Christine Quinn, narrowly survived a 3–2 committee vote yesterday before being passed 37–9 in the full council. It was modified from its original draft, which called for 1,500 carts to be added.

In a statement, Mr. Bloomberg praised the legislation, saying: “Today’s bill will make it easier for all New Yorkers who want to eat a healthier diet to purchase affordable and high-quality fresh fruit and vegetables conveniently in their own neighborhoods.”
