Council Members Renew Call For City To Fill Potholes Pronto
February 21, 2008
Some City Council members are once again looking to reduce the number of potholes in the city.
Council members Darlene Mealy and Eric Gioa are promoting legislation, first introduced last year, that would require the Department of Transportation to fill potholes no more than three days after receiving notification.
They say some New Yorkers have taken matters into their own hands, while waiting for the craters to be fixed.
“She went down to Home Depot and purchased a bag of gravel for about $5, came home that evening, filled the pothole with the gravel,” said New Yorker Yvette Wolotowski of her neighbor.
“For a pothole like this, a pothole this size to be a gaping hole for more then a year, well that is unacceptable,” said Gioia. “The city needs to do its job.”
The DOT says the average time to fill a pothole is already less than three days from the time it’s reported.
Officials add 99 percent of potholes reported to 311 are completely fixed within 30 days.
