MTA chief to give “State of MTA” speech

February 20, 2008

Metropolitan Transportation Authority chief Elliot Sander will address “The State of the MTA” on March 3 at Cooper Union in Manhattan, starting what could become an annual tradition.

“This is the 40th anniversary of the MTA, so it seemed like an appropriate time to look back and look forward,” agency spokesman Jeremy Soffin said. “The speech will assess the current state of the MTA, but it will also provide a vision for the next 40 years.”

The speech is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in Cooper Union’s Great Hall, 7 E. 7th St.

Check-in is 10 a.m. and space is limited, so attendees should RSVP online at mta.info/ceo-rsvp/.

Although Sander routinely gives speeches and regularly updates the MTA board at its meetings, this is the first time in recent memory that a “State of the MTA” speech has been offered, Soffin said.

“I think the idea is to do it annually, but I think we’ll assess how it goes and then decide if we’ll do it every year,” he said.

Soffin said the speech will address “our accomplishments and challenges, the importance of the capital program and the challenge of funding our capital needs.”

The MTA currently is forging ahead with a series of ambitious capital projects, including the first phase of the Second Avenue subway line and the East Side Access Project, which is to connect the Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central Terminal by 2014.
