Aubertine, Barclay get heated in Watertown debate

February 14, 2008

Both Darrel Aubertine and Will Barclay say one way or another, they were able to get their messages across.

“The big issues here in the North Country are taxes, health care and energy costs. Those came through here,” Barclay said.

“Agriculture did come to the fore here and of course agriculture is a huge part of our economy here,” Aubertine said.

But after a rather quiet debate in Canton, Wednesday night’s in Watertown was anything but. The candidates talked about the constant attack ads coming from both camps. The focus was the now famous “River ad.”

The ad, which claims the Barclay family denied the public access to part of the Salmon River along their property, was put together by Aubertine’s camp. He says it reflects the voice of people he’s talked with about it. Barclay says it’s nothing but lies.

“I was a little taken aback by the fact he would ask that question like that in light of the fact his campaign has really been negative right from the start,” said Aubertine.

“When someone says something in an advertisement that turns out to be untrue, you think they might apologize to you. So I was a little disappointed there wasn’t an apology,” Barclay said.

For both men, the focus now shifts back to the question of who gets to put their name on the Independence Line on the ballot. Both parties have sued the other for the right.

Aubertine won the independent nod in Jefferson County and Barclay in Oswego. A state ruling on the issue could come Thursday.

A third and final debate will take place this weekend.

The special election is set for February 26th.
