Senate GOP Revives Troopergate Hearing

February 8, 2008

The Senate Investigations Committee just announced it will hold a public hearing in Albany next Tuesday at noon in the LOB’s Hearing Room A to to examine the management and preservation of records, particularly electronic records, in New York State government.”

This has been an issue since reports - vehemently denied by the Spitzer administration - that steps were taken to either run out the clock on the life of electronic messages or flat-out scrub hard drives in an effort to avoid turning over Troopergate-related communications to either Albany County DA David Soares or the Senate GOP.

The administration and the Senate Republicans are battling in court over the Senate’s right to subpoena the executive, but thousands of documents have been turned over to Soares for his re-ignited Troopergate probe.

In the meantime, the Investigations Committee, headed by Sen. George Winner, plans to:

“Solicit testimony from records management experts in order to better assess New York’s current system; identify pitfalls concerning the widespread use of electronic communications in government today; compare New York’s policies and procedures with those of the federal government and other states; and seek recommendations for ensuring that New York’s system keeps pace with modern technology.”
