AFL-CIO For Will Barclay
February 8, 2008
The NYS AFL-CIO has joined the ranks of big labor organizations standing solidly behind Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno in his battle to maintain control of the chamber, announcing today that it has decided to endorse Republican Assemblyman Will Barclay in the 48th SD special election.
(NOTE: I changed the wording of the above paragraph because, as a commentor correctly stated below, the AFL-CIO is an umbrella organization of unions, not a union itself. Mea culpa. Thanks.)
“The New York State AFL-CIO is pleased to announce the endorsement of Will Barclay for state senate,” said union President Denis Hughes. We feel strongly that he will build upon his impressive track record in the Assembly, and continue to be a guardian for the needs and concerns of working men and women.
“Will Barclay’s accessibility and willingness to discuss issues important to working families has allowed him to cultivate a strong working relationship with the New York State AFL-CIO and its affiliates across the state.”
The union, which has 22,000 members in the 48th SD, will implement a “comprehensive” GOTV effort on Barclay’s behalf and work “diligently” to get him elected, Hughes said.
The AFL-CIO endorsed Barclay for Assembly and also noted that he had a 100 percent labor voting record during the 2006 legislative session. (an interesting achievement as a member of the Assembly minority).
