Councilman Vallone: Fix Con Ed or freeze rate hikes

A New York City Council member says Consolidated Edison shouldn’t be allowed to raise rates unless it takes some real accountability for its infrastructure and makes sure incidents like last year’s steam pipe explosion don’t happen again.
At a meeting Today of the Council’s Consumer Affairs Committee, Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. asked that the state Public Safety Commission consider its own interim report when it comes time to decide on the rate request.
The PSC report found Con Ed deficient in some of its oversight of the pipe that ruptured last July.
Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin said rate hikes are needed for infrastructure expansion and improvements due to growth in the city’s economy and increased energy use.
