LIRR unveils its plan to deal with possible Amtrak strike
January 17, 2008
Long Island Rail Road riders will be steered to several different subway stations to get to and from Manhattan if Amtrak workers strike Jan. 30.
The commuter railroad — which relies on Amtrak facilities at Penn Station — unveiled a plan Wednesday for handling the potential strike. It calls for directing passengers to use several different subway stations in Brooklyn and Queens, so that the transfer hub at Jamaica Station in Queens wouldn’t be dangerously overwhelmed.
Plans also envision a special subway line running between the Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue stop in Queens and Herald Square in Manhattan.
There has never been a strike in Amtrak’s 36-year history, and an eleventh-hour deal or Congressional intervention could well forestall one this time.
