Thompson and Weiner Ahead in Fund-Raising for Mayoral Race

William C. Thompson Jr., the New York City comptroller, has raised the most money so far in the quest forWilliam C. Thompson Jr the Democratic nomination for mayor in 2009, but United States RepresentativeĀ  raised the most in the past six months, according to numbers their campaigns provided on Monday. During that period, Mr. Thompson raised slightly more than $1 million, bringing the amount he has raised for the campaign to $4.2 million. Mr. Thompson’s campaign aides said that he would report having $3.6 million on hand, Jonathan P. Hicks reports.

Anthony D. WeinerRepresentative Weiner, who represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens, will report having raised $1.6 million for the six-month period that ended on Friday. That brings the total he has raised for the mayoral campaign to $3.7 million, with $3.4 million in the bank.

Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker and a potential candidate for mayor, is expected to report having raised $1.1 million in the six-month period, her campaign aides said. That takes her total fund-raising for the 2009 race to about $2.4 million. She will report having about $2.3 million in the bank. Another mayoral aspirant, City Councilman Tony Avella, a Queens Democrat, reported that he raised $77,000 in the six-month period, making his total $180,000. He reported that he had about $150,000 in cash on hand.

The incumbent mayor, Michael R. Bloomberg, who is barred by term limits from seeking a third term, has been growing even more generous in his charitable giving. The mayor increased his philanthropic giving by nearly 25 percent in 2007, donating $205 million to 1,100 organizations, according to his latest filing.
