Spitzer to name three new Appellate Division judges?
January 15, 2008
A tipster says Gov. Eliot Spitzer is poised to name three new Appellate Division judges to the 2nd Department, and much to the enthusiasm of the borough’s Democratic leader, Assemblyman Vito Lopez, they are all from Brooklyn.
All three are currently State Supreme Court Justices: Ariel Belen, Cheryl Chambers (a former prosecutor in DA Charles Hynes’ office), John Leventhal (former law chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party during longtime Borough President Howard Golden’s days).
These appointments will be announced tomorrow afternoon, according to the tipster, and the three judges have already been notified.
Lopez is on something of a roll these days. He was singled out for praise by Spitzer during last week’s State of the State, and also managed to delay the City Council vote on the appointment of the Bronx’s Hector Diaz to the city clerk post.
