January 14, 2008
Two City Councilmen will report this week that they have more than $1 million in the bank for their next campaigns - almost two years ahead of the election.
Eric Gioia (D-Queens) will report $1.5 million on hand, and Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) will list $1.36 million, in advance of the November 2009 election.
Felder will report 600 contributors over the last six months, giving an average of $750 each, as he prepares for a probable run for city controller.
Another controller candidate, Councilman David Yassky (D-Brooklyn), said he will report $890,000 cash on hand after starting to fund-raise in October.
Gioia, who is likely to run for public advocate, will report that his most common contribution was just $10 - and is close to reaching the city’s $3.85 million spending limit for advocate.
All three men are part of a bumper crop of Council members looking for new jobs when term limits force them from office at the end of 2009.
