Republican Convention lawsuit Settled
January 8, 2008
The city has settled a lawsuit with a group of people who were denied a permit to protest on Central Park’s Great Lawn during the 2004 Republican Convention.
The federal cases were brought by an Arab-American and an anti-racism coalition.
The city claims they denied the permits to protect the grass. Under the settlement, the city will fund an independent study of whether restrictions on park use are appropriate. They also must pay $25,000 to both parties in the case.
This was not the first legal challenge the city has seen stemming from the convention. Several wrongful arrest lawsuits were filed after demonstrators were locked up. Some were settled or dismissed, while many are ongoing.
